When you visit the Alcázar of Córdoba you will realize that there are numerous archeological remains of pre-Christian cultures, and that this space had a really important former life.
As you know, the building is very close to the Guadalquivir River, that was known as the Betis River by the romans, in that time the river was navigable up to our city. Large commercial exchanges linked Córdoba with the metropolis, and in order to have good control of these goods, a large customs office was necessary. This port and this customs office were located in the space we know today as the Christian Alcázar…Do you wanna know more about it?
In times of emirs and caliphs, the Umayyad Alcazar was established, those walls witnessed a thousands of stories. That Alcázar was expanding over the years, coming to be located, in part, in the place that occupies us. Therefore, there was an Islamic Alcázar before the Christian one.
After the Christian conquest in 1236, the land was divided between the clergy, the nobility and the Order of Calatrava and it was Alfonso X the Wise who decided to build the current building and fortress that we know today.
Since the year 1482 the Christian Alcázar was the residence of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabel and Fernando, for more than 8 years. From here the monarchs planned the final assault on the last Muslim strongholds that offered resistance in the peninsula, the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada.
During these years numerous historical events took place, but perhaps the most relevant was the first audience that their Majesties held with Christopher Columbus, who, as you know, was trying to convince them to cover the expenses of his risky voyage to the Indies.
After the departure of the Catholic Monarchs to Granada, the building was given to the Tribunal of the Holy Inquisition. Many of the rooms became dungeons, changing its aesthetics completely.
Nowadays the Christian Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs is one of the most beloved places by the people of Córdoba, not in vain, many of them decide to celebrate their wedding inside. Strolling through its gardens and pools is a pleasure for all visitors.
When you visit the Christian Alcázar of Córdoba do not forget to look for its most representative spaces, as is the case of the Hall of the Mosaics. This spaces owes its name to the large collection of mosaics that house its walls, most of them were taken from the area of the Plaza de la Corredera.
If you are in good shape, we highly recommend to go all the way up to The towers of Los Leones and Homenaje, both of them united by a narrow parapet that runs along the north wall. There you will enjoy magnificent views of the city including the river and the Roman Bridge.
One of the most unique spaces are, without a doubt, the Mudejar Royal Baths. Despite its poor state of preservation, we can get an idea of how they were distributed, since all the rooms are perfectly visible. They were built by order of King Alfonso XI for his favorite, Doña Leonor de Guzmán.
Undoubtedly the greatest attraction of the monument are its wonderful gardens, full of pools, fruit trees and countless floral species, which give the whole an exceptional originality. It is a pleasure to see Cordobeses and tourists enjoying a stroll through its different corners.
We’re a group of guides and historians in love with Córdoba. We have prepared pleasant, fun and rigorous, that will make you enjoy 2000 years of history of an unique city.
